GeoArabia Special Publication 3
Carboniferous, Permian and Early Triassic Arabian Stratigraphy
ISBN 99901-04-63-8

The Middle East Permian-Triassic Khuff carbonate reservoirs contain about 15–20% of world’s non-associated gas reserves. Below the Khuff carbonates, the Carboniferous-Permian Al Khlata, Gharif and Unayzah clastic reservoirs contain billions of barrels of oil, gas and condensate reserves. All these reservoirs range across southern Arabia, a region of about one million square kilometres. GeoArabia Special Publication 3 (SP3) presents a comprehensive tectono-stratigraphic analysis of the formations that hold these important hydrocarbon resources.

The outlook for sustained oil, gas and condensate exploration in Arabia is proving more certain than ever. This is driven by the increasing global demand for hydrocarbon resources, the established record of discoveries within the Middle East region, and the limited opportunities in competing basins elsewhere in the world. The accurate timing of tectonic events, and the reliable correlation of key horizons across the Arabian Plate, will lead to better predictions of basin development, migration histories, and the emplacement of commercial hydrocarbons.

Carboniferous, Permian and Early Triassic Arabian Stratigraphy required three years to research and compile as one book. It attracted contributions from enthusiastic experts working in many organizations throughout the world. The papers in the book were interactively written, designed and edited in a website. This allowed all the authors to see each other’s data and interpretations, and to consider their significance for their own studies.
